Sometimes the hardest part of trying something new is getting started. In this 4 week course, audio producer Jules Bradley will create a supportive and invigorating environment to make your first audio piece and build your creative confidence. The final piece will be whatever you want to make – non-narrated oral history, mini-audio doc, fiction, poem, sound art piece – the only criteria of the final piece is that you make it.
This course is designed for total beginners and new producers. This course would be the perfect class for students considering taking the full Salt audio certificate as they create their application portfolio pieces.
Over the course of four weeks, you will be introduced to the hard and soft skills of making an audio piece. Together we will demystify the audio storytelling process, follow our creative impulses, deconstruct societal and self-imposed barriers to creativity, learn and practice the logistics of making a piece from start to finish, and work together in a generative editorial process. The central objective of this workshop is to create an accessible and fun environment to foster your love of creating in an audio medium.
Though this class will explore sound design and editing in a DAW, students will be assigned solo learning practices for the majority of the basics of audio editing. This decision allows more class time to be dedicated to the creative process and allow space for different learning styles.
The only resources needed for this workshop are a method of recording (a phone, portable recording device) and access to a computer that can run a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Jules will be teaching in Reaper (has a free trial), but any DAW will work.
