Course Description

embroidery.jpgInspired by Louise Bourgeois’ ‘Ode a ́ l’ Oubli' and the work of other 'outsider' artists, students will get to play with fabric remnants and non-traditional materials using primarily hand-stitched line.

Participants will be shown how keep a stitched sketchbook, and to loosen up and explore mark making for creating texture, layering, shape and personal storytelling.

This is a Zoom based class.

Faculty:

Maggie Muth has a BFA in Painting (with a minor in drawing) from MECA, and a two year certificate in Stitched Textiles from the Opus School of Textile Arts in the UK. She has been a life-long stitcher and has taught classes at Maine Fiber Arts, Port Fiber and Mayo Street Arts, the American Visionary Art Museum, Maine College of Art, as well as overseas. Supplies: 

  • Sketchbook/notebook
  • your favorite good drawing pen
  • sharp thread snips (i.e. Fiskar)
  • 3 skeins of dmc floss - any color (or similar thread)
  • 1/2 yard of 100% cotton muslin or other similar cloth
  • hand-stitching needles
  • inexpensive 6” embroidery hoop
  • small collection of non-traditional stitching surfaces (paper, Mylar, etc.)
