Students will explore the basic skills for "seeing-to-draw." Drawing is a learned skill, facilitated by directing eyes and visual attention in specific ways. Through demanding and eye-opening exercises, students will discover hidden abilities, using pencil, charcoal and other materials. This course is for beginners and those seeking to improve their drawing skills.

Hi, my name is Chris Gray (he/him/his), and I am excited to be teaching Drawing! I am an artist, draughtsperson, and oil painter from Mount Desert Island, ME, and a graduate of MECA with an MFA in Studio Art. Take a look at my website here.

 

Supplies: 

  • Sketchbook 
  • Newsprint pad, 18x24
  • Bristol paper 
  • Pencils (various hardnesses, ex: 2H, 2B, 6B)
  • Vine charcoal 
  • Compressed charcoal 
  • Conte crayons (black, white, sanguine) 
  • Pink eraser 
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Tortillons (for blending charcoal) 
  • Black India Ink / Sumi Ink
  • Bamboo brushes 
  • Bamboo sketch pen 
  • Small reusable paint palette (will be used for ink washes) 
  • Small container or cup for water (for art purposes ONLY) - Recycled jars/containers are perfect 
  • Small tarp OR plastic garbage bags (to put on floor and wall of workspace)
