A class for anyone interested in learning to sew and are true or basic beginners. This class will cover the workings of your sewing machine, other sewing equipment, materials and sewing construction techniques. Starting with instruction on how to thread your machine and sew a straight line, you will be taught skills that lead you from sewing a basic pillow to building a garment from a commercial pattern. This class is project based and will be suitable for anyone interested in sewing home decorative goods to garments.

Ashley Wernher-Collins is a fiber artist and garment maker from Cape Elizabeth, ME. Her most recent work is as a Studio Tech in the Textile and Fashion Design Department at Maine College of Art. She also works in the costume department at Portland Stage Company. She enjoys building garments that are more structured and incorporate traditional garment sewing techniques. She also enjoys utilizing fabric manipulation techniques to build surface texture and sculptural silhouettes. A sampling of her work can be viewed at www.wernhercollins.com.
Students need to bring their own machines and basic sewing tools (i.e. fabric and paper shears, rulers, hand sewing needles) to the class.
