Course Description

Working in MECA's state-of-the-art woodworking studios, students will learn basic woodworking and furniture making techniques with the goal of completing a simple Shaker side table. Students will learn safe and proper usage of basic hand tools and woodworking equipment, as well as basic joinery techniques, and finishing. Some of the techniques we will cover include: lumber preparation, milling processes, mortise and tenon joinery, hand shaping, sanding, and finishing. Each student will leave with a strong introduction to the basic processes of furniture making, and small side table at least most of the way completed.

Joe Lendway earned his BFA in Woodworking + Furniture Design from Maine College of Art in 2015. Since graduating, he has worked with a variety of local furniture makers, including Matt Hutton and Jamie Johnston, and has assisted local artists on a variety of large and small scale projects. Joe currently designs and builds custom furniture out of his studio at the Open Bench Project, a community maker space in Portland.
