Course Description

Portland, Maine is an old port city rich in architectural history and natural beauty. If you are interested in collecting and research as a part of your studio practice, this workshop will allow you to investigate place‰, and how it inspires the creative process. Participants will engage themselves with collecting natural & found objects, drawing, writing & photographing while immersing themselves in ‰place‰. We will walk and visit several architectural sites to collect materials to make a mixed media sculpture of curiosities. This workshop will focus on constructing a finished mixed media piece ‰using paper, collage, paint, wire, fabric & stone. The artist is encouraged to bring a found object that will be transformed to house the collection (i.e. old jewelry box, hat box, old musical instrument case). Discussions will include how traditional and contemporary artists use these themes in their work. This workshop is open to all levels.
