This course is for both beginners in printmaking and experienced printmakers who wish to explore safer, non-toxic, approaches to printing. Students will use contemporary process for making: etched copper printing plates treated with acrylic hard and soft grounds; dry point plastic printing plates and paper plate lithographs for monochrome and multicolor printing. Students may also work with previously made plates to reprint or combine with newly made plates. Demonstrations of a variety of strategies for edition printing and monoprinting on paper and cloth will be presented with ongoing individual consultation and critiques. Students may explore a variety of techniques or focus on one or two areas of interest.

Judith Allen-Efstathiou is a sculptor, printmaker and mixed media artist who works with copper, traditional intaglio printmaking and experimental, contemporary printmaking processes. She is especially interested in the overlap of printmaking with other fine art disciplines and often includes some form of printmaking in her mixed media work and sculpture. She was recently awarded a commission to make relief sculptures for the Maine State House and the Waldo County Justice Center using the historic copper removed from the State House dome in reroofing. She has exhibited her work in the USA and Europe in a number of international printmaking biennials.
