Course Description

This class concentrates on copper, brass and sterling silver rings made to decorate the hand and pendants to adorn the neck. Participants will learn basic fabrication techniques used to make handmade rings & pendants such as piercing, forming, soldering, hollow forms and surface finishing. In addition, there will be demonstrations on various stone setting methods, for example: bezel wire, prong and hammer setting. We will also study how to best adorn the neck and hang the pendant with chain making and bead necklaces. Discussions will include applying the principles of design to jewelry making and a brief history of the medium. This class is open to beginners & intermediate metalsmiths.
Students enrolled in this class do not have access to Open Bench studio.

Kate Katomski is a multi-media artist and educator whose inter-disciplinary experience includes sculpture, printmaking, performance, video and installation. She received a BFA in Ceramics with a minor in Textiles from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA (1985). She received a MFA in Studio Art at Maine College of Art, Portland ME (2002). Katomski has exhibited her work throughout the United States including the Knoxville Museum of Art, E. Tennessee Museum of History in Knoxville, TN; The Kitchen Art Gallery, New York, NY; Carving Studio and Sculpture Center Gallery, W. Rutland, VT; Shelburne Farm, Burlington City Arts, VT; A.I.R. Gallery II, New York, NY; the Pelham Art Center, Pelham, NY. She teaches Architecture History & Studio at Southern Maine Community College, S. Portland, ME. She taught at The New School for Social Research, New York, NY; Sculpture Center, New York, NY; and Columbia Preparatory School, New York, NY.
