Course Description

Learn the basics of reading patterns, construction and sewing techniques by making a simple A-line skirt using a store bought pattern. Specific skills learned will include sewing and finishing seams, installing a lining, building a waistband, hemming and installing a zipper. Students will bring their own woven fabric. (Knits and sheer fabrics are not recommended.) Students to bring their own sewing machines.

Ashley Wernher-Collins currently works as TA and Studio Tech for the Textile & Fashion Department at MECA. After earning a BA in Art History 20 years ago she graduated from MECA in May 2016 with a BFA degree in Textile & Fashion Design. Learning to sew offers people opportunities to make unique garments that fit their individual style. Outside of MECA she makes garments on commission and works periodically at Portland Stage Company in their costume shop.
