This course will enhance your understanding of garment construction and expand your design possibilities. We will consider flattering styles, how to choose the right fabric for the project, how to work with various fabrics, and how to correct a commercial pattern for personal fit. You will learn layout, cutting, and useful techniques for both hand and machine sewing. Demonstrations of sewing and construction techniques will be combined with guidance for individual projects. The 10-week format will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and help you push through the challenging parts of your projects. This course is open to beginners as well as to those with sewing experience.

Cheslye Ventimiglia has a dressmaking studio in Portland and specializes in the reconstruction of vintage clothing and costume design. She volunteers in the costume shop at Portland Stage and has taught sewing and pattern making at MECA since 2000 with an emphasis on quality garment construction.
SUPPLIES: Portable sewing machine, an extension cord, a dressmaker's measuring tape, dressmaker's glass-head pins, a pair of sharp scissors, sewing needles, thread, and a seam ripper.
