Course Description

In this introductory bookbinding course students will learn a variety of bookbinding techniques including but not limited to: coptic, stab, french link, perfect, and pamphlet bindings. Students will gain the skill, knowledge, and experience necessary to make and bind their own artist books, sketchbooks, chap books, notebooks, and more!

Emmeline Solomon is an artist and educator currently working in Portland, Maine. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Maine College of art, an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis, and a cup of coffee in each hand. Her training and heart is in printmaking, despite a multidisciplinary practice. She gains most of her inspiration from monthly visits to the laundromat, dust, and bus terminals.


SUPPLIES:

  • Bone folder
  • binders needles (minimum: 1 straight, one curved)
  • awl
  • brush for gluing
  • glue (elmers white school glue is acceptable but PVA is preferred)
  • secondary container for glue
  • book board
  • book cloth
  • a variety of decorative papers
  • text-weight paper for pages
  • xacto knife or scalpel (scalpel preferred)
  • bookbinding thread (waxed)
  • mull/crash or a good long-fiber
  • Japanese paper (small quantity)
  • linen tape
